In 2011, there were talks within the government of further cutting off Medicare budget as political leaders face the nations problem on economic turmoil. Needless to say I am against that because Medicare is a basic social health service.
Social or health services are responsibilities of the federal government to provide. Social health services are there because they are basic services that we need like education, health and shelter.
Without any health care services, a lot of our fellow citizens will suffer because not everybody can afford to be in a nice hospital. With the importance of Medicare, we cannot risk billions of dollars being lost every year because of selfish scams.
Medicare fraud occurs when the service is charged or billed for procedures that were even done in the first place. This means Medicare is being overbilled.
Among the most popular is phantom billing. In phantom billing, charges are made for procedures, tests, and equipment that were never really made or ordered in the first place.
Other common Medicare fraud techniques are unbundling and code jamming. Code jamming means faking diagnosis codes are used to get coverage. Another one is up coding which means faking diagnosis codes to charge costs higher than the original procedure. Whereas in double billing, services done are charged more than one.
Scammers are the only people who benefit from Medicare fraud while everybody else loses. Honest and law abiding citizens, the government, and medical professionals all lose every time fraudulent Medicare practices are committed. These fraudulent people are stealing taxpayer’s money and the whole country is not benefiting from it.
