Optimizing Social Profiles for SEO

For the many of us that have been setting up social profiles and social bookmarking our sites in hopes of increased traffic, the time has come. Google has begun searching social profiles and logging these results. I believe their reasoning behind this move will be to better understand the person/company and their social habits.  Just as Google has the doubleclick cookies to track where you have been on the internet to better advertise to you, I think this is the same reasons for the social profile tracking.

At one time, people were getting criticized for setting up so many social network profiles. Internet marketers had an idea of setting a bunch of social profiles, adding their links in there with some keywords, and getting one way links. This led to a bunch of spam complaints and even some of the search engines not counting the links and even counting them against you. but, like always, the search engines eventually relax their rules, and what was not allowed at once is now allowed.

While this is extremely good for business, it is very scary for personal profiles. Think of all of the data being collected by social networks about you. People feel some strange reason to place their entire history online for the world to see. Once Google starts cataloging all of this information about you, they will have their hands a basic FBI style profile on you. This is the bad part of this. But from a business standpoint, you can exploit this opportunity to your advantage.

The best ways to optimize your social profiles for seo are as follows:

  1. Sign up with a legitimate email address, but not your primary one. Be sure to check this email and answer all of your posts and comments.
  2. Set up your account with a related username. If your niche or business is into gardening, then you might make your username gardnermike.
  3. Only post and bookmark information related to the business and business related topics.
  4. Ensure your profile has a link to the website you are looking to promote.
  5. Add as many keywords to your social profile as possible. But, make sure you are not keyword stuffing. It still needs to sound good.
  6. Add a picture to your profile. I would also use the same picture for all of your accounts. This will give the users and potential customers confidence that each site they see your picture is actually you.

I think if you follow those rules you will be better suited to take advantage of the indexing of social profiles. You business could get that much needed boost in search engine rankings. Just be sure to keep it simple, and not start keyword stuffing or spamming the social networks. This will result in canceled accounts, and that does absolutely no good for your business. Just set up a good social profile and add some good content. This is not your entire business, only a small part of it. So maximize it!

Hard Work With Link Building Will Pay Off

Link BuildingI am not sure what you have heard or have been doing up to this point when it comes to link building. But let me tell you, if this is done correctly, it is definitely hard work. I know there are programs and software out there which will blast your link all over the web, but does this really help? No, it does not. What you end up with are plenty of your links in places you do not want them to be. The better way is to put in a little hard work, space it out over time, and only use quality sources. Here are a few places you can search to get your link placed.

  1. Social Bookmarking – This is a very good area, but be careful about spamming the internet with this method. There are a few sites out there that will allow you to bookmark to multiple places all at once. This a very good time saver, and if used sparingly, can be very good for links. Most of these social networking sites now are “no follow” links, so the spiders do not end up at your site. But, the link will still count. I would also set up separate social networking sites for each one of your sites, products, or companies. you really don’t want to build a list of followers for a health product, and then start bookmarking automotive links.
  2. Blogs – This can be your own blog, or you can use someone else’s blog. Some bloggers allow people to comment on their sites and allow the links from the users (commenter) to be a “follow” link. This is where the hard work comes in. It takes time to find good blogs like this. Once you do, then ensure you read their entire post, and then offer some good quality feedback on the comments section. Bloggers appreciate this as it also helps their blog. And, if you are lucky enough, they might actually contact you and ask you to be a guest blogger.
  3. Forums – We all know these are good places. I normally steer clear of trying to place links within the post themselves. Just setup a decent signature, track the link you have there, and then post good quality content. It is all about you personally posting the good content at each place. Not having some robot do this sort of work for you. And, don’t try to post on every topic to get your post count up. The long time forum people will see right through that and will call you out on it.
  4. Nonprofit Organizations – This is a jackpot location if you can find it. Try the local Chamber of Commerce, or even some of the local churches. You might offer your services or products for free, and in return, they just post a link on their site linking to your site.
  5. Press Releases – You are always told with article marketing and the likes, not to mention your company until the resources sections. Also, these marketing strategies should not be a blatant advertisement for your website. But, with a press release, none of that matters. This is all about you, your company, and your company’s products and services.  Tell the whole world about you. It is a very good place to generate links. And, most of the news sites pick up press releases, so you may be able to get on Google or Yahoo’s front page of news.

Those are 5 excellent places to get your link published. As you can see, it will take a little more work to make this happen. you should continue with your normal methods of marketing, like articles and video marketing. But when it comes to building links, try the ideas above. It will pay off in the end.

Keep Your Business and Website Professional

Professional Website DesignDoes your web site shout out “Professional” or “Amateur”? This is the question most people are asking in today’s online world. Part of the reason is it has now become so easy to setup a website that Grandma has one for canning muscadine jelly. With that in mind, it is extremely important to show that you and your business are a professional business.

The other reason it is important to show you are a professional is because you are not trusted just yet. You may have some pretty good information, but at times people can be scared to click on a link. Of course, if you look at a site like wikipedia, they do not look very professional at all. But, they are truly respected. They have the respect and longevity. You on the other hand, can not compete with that. So, making sure your website looks good is important.

There are a few steps you can take to ensure your online presence is one of professionalism.

For starters, ensure every part of the site is clean, easy to navigate, and looks the same. This will help the users to have a feeling of consistency. You also do not want to have any crazy pictures on the site.

Another area to concentrate on in the website copy. Proof read every part of your website and ensure the grammar is perfect. The last place someone is going to spend money is with someone who has poor grammar on their website. A positive tone for the site is also a must. Do not get into any issues with speaking negatively about another company and/or person. Everything should positive, upbeat, and well spoken.

Since social media is a key part of any business, try to incorporate as much of your site into your social networking sites. These social sites need to be specifically for your business. If you can add a picture to each site, and are going to, make it a nice looking picture of just you and keep it the same on all of the sites (helps with the consistency). Some social sites, like Twitter, allow you to change the background image. If possible, make this the same as your business website.

One other thing is to try to keep all of the personal information off of these sites. I mean, you can have a personal social site and blog, but try to keep your personal and business information as far apart as possible.

The last area you want to address is what you wear. At one time it was cool to be able to troll around in flip flops and a t-shirt and say you owned your own business. But, now it is different. You need to be dressed for success, not just with your website, but also with your dress code. Show up to meetings and seminars in a professional look. Whether right or not, people will judge you within the first 10 seconds that they meet you. Do not give them a reason not to do business with you.

The main point to remember is to maintain a professional appearance with your website and with yourself. Separate yourself from those “get-rich-quick” websites and people online. Prove you are a legitimate business and you will be one step ahead of the rest.
